Anthony Chang, Managing Director, TL Ventures

Anthony joined TL in 2002 as the firm’s first Kauffman Fellow. Anthony’s investment focus includes consumer-focused opportunities as well as wireless and semiconductor-related companies.

Anthony’s venture experience began in 1998, when he co-founded and built Magictel.com, Inc., one of the first voice-over-IP service providers in Greater China and Southeast Asia. The Company conducted a reverse takeover of a publicly listed company in Hong Kong and raised over US $100 million in secondary offerings. Anthony subsequently joined GE Equity in Hong Kong where he focused on early-stage venture opportunities in Asia. He was also part of the private equity team at Peregrine Investment Holdings (one of Asia’s largest investment banks during the 1990s) where he handled technology and communications-related investments. Anthony began his career at the San Francisco Consulting Group, a strategic consulting firm focused on the communications industry. He also worked briefly in Lucent’s Mobility Solutions Group.

Anthony holds a BA with Honors from Stanford University and an MBA degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration.

Carl Eibl, Managing Director, Enterprise Partners Venture Capital

Carl Eibl is a Managing Director at Enterprise Partners. At Enterprise, Carl leads investments in Internet 2.0, software and semiconductor based businesses, as well as restructurings and business buyouts and combinations.

Prior to joining Enterprise in 2003, Carl was the CEO of several high profile technology and life science companies in San Diego. As CEO of publicly-held Maxwell Technologies (MXWL), Carl led the recreation of Maxwell from an engineering and physics service organization for the U.S. military to a high-tech business that develops, manufactures and commercializes energy storage devices called ultracapacitors in the industrial, energy and transportation markets and single board computers and components in the satellite and space market. Before joining Maxwell, Carl served as President of Stratagene Corporation (STGN), then a privately-held biotechnology company selling DNA, RNA, biologicals and laboratory instruments in the pharmaceutical and university biotech research markets. Stratagene was acquired by Agilent Corporation in 2007 for $250 million. Carl also served as CEO for Mycogen Corporation a publicly-held agricultural, biotechnology company, which was sold to The Dow Chemical Company at the end of 1998 for $1.1 billion.

Carl holds a J.D. from the Boston University School of Law in Boston, MA, and a B.A. from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY.

John Hoffman, CEO, Pivotal Systems

John Hoffman has over 25 years of global high technology management experience building growth organizations in both the semiconductor and information technology markets.

Prior to joining Pivotal Systems, John was a Senior VP with Spencer Trask Ventures, a New York based venture capital firm. While at Spencer Trask, John was primarily involved in the solar and integrated circuit efforts of the firm. Prior to Spencer Trask, John was the Chief Executive Officer of RagingWire Enterprise Solutions, an Inc 500 fastest growing private company. John reorganized the company and enabled record growth in revenue and profitability during his tenure. Prior to RagingWire, John worked in various general manager roles at Applied Materials for 18 years. He was the President of the billion dollar “Etch Product Business Group”, VP and GM of the Process Control and Diagnostic Business Group and the General Manager of the Customer Service Division which grew by over 300% during his tenure.

John has a B.S. from the United States Military Academy at West Point and an Executive MBA ( AEA) from Stanford University. He currently serves on several Boards of Directors and Advisory Boards.

Joseph Monkowski, President and CTO, Pivotal Systems

Joseph Monkowski has extensive experience in the semiconductor industry focused on providing process equipment and metrology solutions for next generation device manufacturing.

Prior to joining Pivotal, Monkowski was the SVP of Business Development for Advanced Energy Industries, where he led the company's M&A strategy to expand its product portfolio and position the company as a market leader in the semiconductor subsystems space. Previously, he held senior executive positions at Pacific Scientific, Photon Dynamics and Lam Research, where he served as EVP and CTO. During his career, Monkowski led efforts to design and build a number of leading CVD and plasma etch systems, winning the R&D 100 award and multiple Semiconductor International Best Product awards. He has authored numerous patents and publications.

Joseph Monkowski has a B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and an M.S. in Materials Science, all from Penn State University. He also served as a Professor of Electrical Engineering for six years at Penn State University.

Bruce Rhine, Chairman of the Board, Nanometrics Incorporated

Bruce Rhine currently serves as Nanometric’s Chairman of the Board of Directors. He has held positions of Chief Executive Officer and Chief Strategy Officer at Nanometrics as well. Prior to Nanometrics, Mr. Rhine served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Accent Optical Technologies, Inc.

Mr. Rhine holds a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering and an M.B.A. in Finance from Pennsylvania State University.
